Quiet Camp

Welcome to the Quiet Camp project for Burningman 2001.

Quiet Camp is a safe haven away from the craziness of burningman where quiet takes precedence over noise. There's two pieces to quiet camp. There's the camp (the spot itself), and there's the structure. The camp is open to anyone who wishes to hang with us. The structure is reserved for those who have been constructing it.

The quiet camp structure was designed by Barry for Burningman 2000, but it proved to dominate too much of his time. I talked with Barry and I decided to take over his quiet camp structure for 2001. While the design was complete, there was still a bit of work to do to improve and correct the structure. The rest of this page will discuss the structure.

Here were my goals for this project:

  1. Provide a quiet space/structure for people to camp and chill
  2. Make structure more impervious to wind storms and other weather
  3. Simplify and quicken setup and tear down
  4. Have fun with it and collaborate with those interested in building the structure and the surrounding area
  5. Stick to the quiet theme as described in Barry's original Quiet Camp Manifesto., It basically states that, while quiet camp may be many things to all of us, the focus will remain on providing a safe, quiet space.

Here is the current set of plans which includes a parts list and a step by step guide to putting the structure together.

We're going to try and set up on the block that's bordered by 9:30, 10, the justice, and the pantaloon (just like last year). Check out the map with our markers. If we're not there, we should be within eyeshot.

Feel free to invite your friends to camp near us, but make sure they understand that they respect our notion of quiet camp.
